About Trek

Kathmandu Valley mountain biking is a great way to explore Nepal beyond the busy streets and popular tourist attractions. The trails take you through quiet villages, terraced farmland, forest paths, temples and hill ridges while offering beautiful views of the Kathmandu Valley and Himalayan ranges. Depending on your experience, you can choose an easy village ride or a more challenging route with steep climbs and exciting downhill sections.

One of the best things about mountain biking in Kathmandu Valley is the variety of routes available close to the city. Popular trails include Kakani, Shivapuri, Chisapani, Nagarkot, Changunarayan, Godavari, Phulchowki and Chandragiri. Some routes focus more on nature and forest riding, while others combine cycling with local culture and historic Newari villages. This makes Kathmandu Valley suitable for both first-time mountain bikers and experienced riders looking for technical trails and longer climbs.

For travelers who want more than a short cycling trip, we recommend a multi-day Kathmandu Valley Mountain Bike Tour. A popular itinerary connects Kathmandu → Kakani → Chisapani → Nagarkot → Changunarayan → Kathmandu, combining mountain trails, forest sections, village roads and spectacular viewpoints. The route can be adjusted according to your fitness, cycling experience and available time, making it a comfortable and rewarding way to discover the natural and cultural side of the Kathmandu Valley.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu to Kakani

Distance: approximately 25–30 km
Difficulty: Moderate

Start your ride from Kathmandu and head toward Balaju and Budhanilkantha before continuing toward the Shivapuri area. The route gradually climbs away from the city and passes through local settlements, farmland and quieter roads. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes greener and the city views open up. Continue toward Kakani, a popular hill station known for mountain views and peaceful surroundings. Overnight in Kakani.

Day 2: Kakani to Chisapani

Distance: approximately 20–30 km
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

After breakfast, continue riding through forest trails and rural landscapes toward Mulkharka. The route includes a mixture of dirt tracks, climbs and downhill sections before reaching Chisapani, a scenic ridge settlement. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy impressive Himalayan views from the area. Overnight in Chisapani.

Day 3: Chisapani to Nagarkot

Ride from Chisapani toward Nagarkot, passing through forest, villages and terraced farmland. This is one of the most enjoyable sections because the route combines moderate cycling with beautiful countryside. Nagarkot is a famous viewpoint and a good place to relax after the ride.

Day 4: Nagarkot to Changunarayan and Kathmandu

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic downhill ride from Nagarkot toward Changunarayan. Continue through local villages before visiting the historic temple area. From here, ride or transfer back toward Kathmandu, depending on the chosen route and rider's preference.

Important: Riders should use a proper mountain bike, helmet, gloves, water bottle and basic repair equipment. For forest and more technical routes, riding with a local guide is strongly recommended. If the itinerary includes Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, the applicable park and bicycle entry requirements should also be checked before departure.
