About Trek

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu is a deeply spiritual and unforgettable journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in western Tibet. For many pilgrims, this is much more than an ordinary tour or sightseeing trip. It is a journey of faith, devotion, inner peace, self-discovery and personal challenge. The pilgrimage takes you through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes of the Himalayas, making the experience meaningful both spiritually and naturally.

Beginning in Kathmandu, Nepal, the journey gradually leads toward the Nepal–Tibet border and then across the vast and dramatic Tibetan Plateau. Along the way, travelers encounter changing landscapes, mountain valleys, remote settlements, high-altitude deserts and magnificent Himalayan views. As the journey continues toward Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, the surroundings become increasingly peaceful and awe-inspiring.

Mount Kailash stands at approximately 6,638 meters, while Lake Manasarovar is situated at around 4,590 meters above sea level. The sacred mountain is revered by followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and the Bon tradition, making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Asia. For Hindu pilgrims, Mount Kailash is traditionally associated with Lord Shiva and is regarded as his sacred abode.

One of the most important parts of the pilgrimage is the Kailash Kora, also known as Kailash Parikrama. The traditional outer Kora covers approximately 52–53 kilometers around Mount Kailash. The highest and most challenging point of the route is Dolma La Pass, which reaches approximately 5,630–5,645 meters. The Kora is physically demanding, particularly because of the high altitude, cold weather and rugged mountain terrain.

The journey also provides time for pilgrims to experience the peaceful beauty of Lake Manasarovar, where many travelers spend time in prayer, meditation and personal reflection.

The itinerary presented here is a sample 10-day Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu Kailash Mansarovar Yatra designed to give travelers an overview of the journey. However, the actual route, border crossing, transportation, accommodation, permits and travel schedule may change according to current Tibet travel regulations, border operations, road conditions, weather and local operating arrangements. Travelers should therefore confirm the final itinerary and travel conditions before departure.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival and Yatra Preparation

Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu begins with your arrival in Kathmandu.

Our team welcomes you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel. After checking in, you can rest and prepare for the journey ahead.

Depending on the group's schedule, there may be a briefing about the journey, travel documents, border procedures, health precautions and the equipment required for the high-altitude sections.

This is also a good opportunity to meet your fellow pilgrims and ask any final questions before leaving Kathmandu.

Overnight: Kathmandu
Meals: As per package

Day 2: Kathmandu – Nepal–Tibet Border – Kerung/Gyirong

After an early breakfast, we leave Kathmandu and travel toward the Nepal–Tibet border.

The road takes us through the Himalayan countryside of Nepal. As we move north, the landscape gradually changes from green hills and river valleys to rugged mountain terrain.

After completing the necessary Nepal-side border formalities, we continue toward the Kerung/Gyirong area, subject to the current border arrangements.

This is the beginning of your journey into the high-altitude Tibetan landscape.

Overnight: Kerung/Gyirong area
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Important: Border crossing and accommodation arrangements can change. The final route should always be confirmed before departure.

Day 3: Kerung/Gyirong – Saga

Today we continue deeper into Tibet toward Saga.

The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the road crosses the vast Tibetan Plateau. You will see wide open landscapes, distant snow-covered mountains and the unique high-altitude environment of Tibet.

The journey is long, but the changing scenery makes it memorable. Take your time, drink plenty of water and follow the advice of your guide as your body adjusts to the increasing altitude.

Overnight: Saga
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Saga – Lake Manasarovar

Today is one of the most exciting days of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

We continue across the Tibetan Plateau toward Lake Manasarovar. As the sacred lake comes into view, many pilgrims experience a special sense of peace and excitement after the long journey.

Lake Manasarovar is situated at approximately 4,590 meters and is one of the most important destinations of the pilgrimage.

Spend time near the lake for prayer, meditation and personal reflection, according to the conditions and itinerary.

The views of the surrounding mountains and the enormous Tibetan landscape make this a truly unforgettable part of the journey.

Overnight: Lake Manasarovar area
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Lake Manasarovar – Darchen

Wake up to the peaceful surroundings of Lake Manasarovar.

Depending on the group's arrangements and local conditions, there may be time for prayers and a short visit around the lake before continuing toward Darchen, the traditional starting point of the Kailash Kora.

Darchen is located at the foot of Mount Kailash and serves as the main base for pilgrims preparing for the Parikrama.

Today is also an important preparation day for the Kora. Your guide will explain the next stage, walking conditions and arrangements for the pilgrimage.

Overnight: Darchen
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Kailash Kora – The Sacred Parikrama

The Kailash Kora, also known as the Kailash Parikrama, is one of the most important parts of the pilgrimage.

The outer Kora is approximately 52–53 km and is traditionally completed over three days. The route passes through Yamadwar, Dirapuk, Dolma La and Zuthulpuk before returning toward Darchen.

Because a full three-day Kora adds significant time to a Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu itinerary, the exact Kora arrangement for a 10-day program must be confirmed according to the operating schedule, route and current travel conditions.

Day 6: Darchen – Yamadwar – Dirapuk

Today begins the main walking section of the Kailash Parikrama.

We travel from Darchen toward Yamadwar and begin walking along the sacred route around Mount Kailash.

The trail gradually leads toward Dirapuk, where magnificent views of the northern face of Mount Kailash can be seen.

Take the walk slowly. At this altitude, there is no benefit in rushing. Your guide will help maintain an appropriate pace and monitor the group throughout the day.

Overnight: Dirapuk
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinne

Day 7: Dirapuk – Dolma La – Zuthulpuk

This is normally the most demanding day of the Kailash Kora.

The trail climbs toward Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the Parikrama at approximately 5,630–5,645 meters. The combination of altitude, steep sections, cold temperatures and unpredictable mountain weather makes this a challenging section of the pilgrimage.

After crossing Dolma La, the trail descends toward the area of Gauri Kund before continuing toward Zuthulpuk.

Walk slowly, conserve your energy and listen carefully to your guide. If you experience serious altitude-related symptoms, inform your guide immediately.

Overnight: Zuthulpuk
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: Zuthulpuk – Darchen – Saga

After completing the final section of the Kailash Kora, we return toward Darchen.

The final section is generally shorter than the previous day's walk. After reaching the road, we continue by vehicle toward the return route.

Depending on the operating schedule and road conditions, we continue toward Saga or another suitable overnight location.

After several demanding days, this is a good time to relax, recover and enjoy the feeling of having completed the main pilgrimage section.

Overnight: Saga or surrounding area
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Saga – Kerung/Gyirong – Nepal Border

Today we begin the journey back toward Nepal.

We travel across the Tibetan Plateau toward Kerung/Gyirong. After completing the necessary Tibet-side and Nepal-side border procedures, we continue toward Nepal, depending on the day's border operating conditions.

The landscape gradually changes as we leave the high Tibetan Plateau behind.

Overnight: Nepal
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 10: Nepal – Kathmandu

After breakfast, we continue our journey toward Kathmandu.

As the familiar landscapes of Nepal return, the long pilgrimage gradually comes to an end.

We arrive in Kathmandu and transfer you to your hotel or onward departure point.

Your 10-day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu to Kathmandu ends with memories of Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, the Tibetan Plateau and the challenging Kailash Kora.

Overnight: Not included unless required
Meals: Breakfast

Why Choose Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal?

Traveling to Kailash through Nepal gives the journey a special Himalayan character.

The adventure begins in Kathmandu and gradually moves from Nepal's green mountain valleys toward the dry, vast landscape of Tibet. Along the way, you experience remote roads, high-altitude landscapes and the spiritual atmosphere surrounding Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

For pilgrims, however, the most meaningful part is the spiritual connection with the destination.

Mount Kailash is sacred to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and the Bon tradition. In Hindu tradition, it is associated with Lord Shiva, while Tibetan Buddhists know the mountain as Kang Rinpoche, the “Precious Snow Mountain.”

Is the 10-Day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Difficult?

Yes. This is a high-altitude pilgrimage, and travelers should not underestimate the physical demands.

The main challenges include:

  • High altitude
  • Low oxygen levels
  • Cold and changing weather
  • Long road journeys
  • Uneven walking trails
  • Basic accommodation in some areas
  • The demanding climb toward Dolma La
  • Rapid changes in weather and travel conditions

The most challenging part is generally the second day of the Kailash Kora, when the trail reaches Dolma La.

Previous trekking experience can be helpful, but technical mountaineering experience is not normally required. Good physical preparation and proper acclimatization are much more important.

Altitude and Health During Kailash Yatra

Altitude is one of the most important things to understand before booking a Kailash Mansarovar Tour.

Lake Manasarovar itself is around 4,590 meters high, and the Kailash Kora reaches more than 5,600 meters.

Possible symptoms of altitude illness include headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, shortness of breath and difficulty sleeping. Serious symptoms should never be ignored.

We strongly recommend that travelers:

  • Have a medical check-up before the journey
  • Train regularly before departure
  • Walk at a comfortable pace
  • Drink enough fluids
  • Follow the guide's instructions
  • Inform the guide immediately about concerning symptoms
  • Carry suitable travel insurance
  • Make sure insurance covers emergency assistance and evacuation where appropriate

Best Time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The best time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal depends not only on weather but also on border operations, permits, road conditions and Tibet travel arrangements.

The warmer pilgrimage season is generally the preferred period, but there is no single date that can be guaranteed every year.

Before booking, travelers should check:

  • Current Tibet travel regulations
  • Border accessibility
  • Road conditions
  • Weather
  • Permit availability
  • Kailash Kora operating conditions
  • Transportation availability

High-altitude weather can change quickly, so a flexible travel plan is important.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Permits and Documents

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is an organized pilgrimage, not an independent trekking route.

Depending on your nationality and selected route, you may need appropriate Tibet travel documentation and permits, as well as Nepal-side permissions.

Travelers should generally be prepared with:

  • Valid passport
  • Required visa/documentation
  • Tibet travel permits
  • Nepal entry documents where applicable
  • Travel insurance
  • Passport photographs if required
  • Emergency contact details
  • Necessary medical documents

The exact requirements should always be confirmed before booking because regulations can change.

Important Note About Our 10-Day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The 10-day itinerary above is intended as a sample itinerary for planning and marketing purposes.

The traditional Kailash Kora itself normally takes approximately three days, while a longer acclimatization period is often appropriate for a high-altitude pilgrimage. Therefore, the exact feasibility of a 10-day Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu program depends heavily on the current route, transportation, border procedures, permits and operating conditions.

For a safer and more realistic commercial package, your website should clearly state:

“The itinerary is subject to change according to current Tibet travel regulations, border conditions, road conditions, weather, permits and local operating arrangements.”

This is more trustworthy than promising travelers that every 10-day departure will follow exactly the same schedule.
