Overview

The 10 Days Thorong La Pass Trek is an exhilarating journey through the Annapurna Circuit, offering breathtaking Himalayan views, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. This adventure takes you across Thorong La Pass (5,416m), one of the world’s highest trekking passes, connecting the lush Marsyangdi Valley to the arid Mustang region. Ideal for adventure seekers, this trek provides a perfect balance of challenge and beauty, making it one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking routes.

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani, passing through terraced fields, traditional villages, and riverside landscapes. As you ascend through Chame, Pisang, and Manang, you’ll experience stunning views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. Manang (3,540m) is a crucial acclimatization stop, where trekkers can explore nearby lakes and monasteries while adjusting to the altitude.

From Manang, the trail leads to Ledar (4,200m) and Thorong Phedi (4,540m), where the rugged terrain and thinning air add to the adventure. The highlight of the trek is the Thorong La Pass (5,416m), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After crossing the pass, the trail descends into the sacred town of Muktinath (3,800m), a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists.

The trek concludes with a scenic drive from Muktinath to Pokhara via Jomsom, passing through Kagbeni and the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest gorge. Finally, a return drive to Kathmandu marks the end of this unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

This moderate to challenging trek is best suited for physically fit trekkers with prior hiking experience. The best seasons to embark on the Thorong La Pass Trek are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is stable, and the views are at their best.

Itinerary

Day 01: Drive to Besi Sahar (760m) and to Dharapani (1,860m)

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besi Sahar, passing through terraced fields and hillside villages. From Besi Sahar, a bumpy jeep ride takes you along rugged roads to Dharapani, a beautiful village surrounded by lush forests. Along the way, you'll pass small settlements like Bhulbhule and Jagat, where locals carry on with their daily lives. Dharapani offers a mix of traditional Tibetan-style homes and stunning views of snow-capped peaks.

Day 02: Trek to Chame (2,670m)

The trail gradually ascends through dense pine forests and follows the Marsyangdi River, offering breathtaking views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. Small villages like Timang and Koto provide glimpses of local Tibetan-influenced culture and lifestyle. As you reach Chame, the district headquarters of Manang, you’ll find natural hot springs to relax in. The town is nestled between towering cliffs and offers a stunning Himalayan backdrop.

Day 03: Trek to Upper/Lower Pisang (3,200m / 3,300m)

Leaving Chame, the trail passes through apple orchards and crosses wooden bridges over glacial rivers. Small settlements like Bhratang and Dhukur Pokhari provide opportunities to rest while enjoying panoramic views of Annapurna and Pisang Peak. The trek continues toward the picturesque village of Pisang, where you can choose to stay in Lower Pisang for an easier route or Upper Pisang for better mountain views. The region is known for its ancient monasteries and traditional stone houses.

Day 04: Trek to Manang (3,540m)

From Pisang, you can take the lower route through Humde or the scenic upper route via Ghyaru and Ngawal, offering spectacular views of the Annapurna range. The trail passes through Tibetan-style villages, mani walls, and prayer wheels, reflecting the region’s rich Buddhist culture. Manang is a vibrant high-altitude village where trekkers acclimatize before climbing higher. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, Manang offers stunning views of Gangapurna Glacier and Annapurna III.

Day 05: Acclimatization in Manang

A rest day in Manang helps adjust to the altitude, with options for short hikes to Gangapurna Lake or the high-altitude Ice Lake (4,600m). Exploring the village provides insight into the traditional lifestyle of the Manangi people, influenced by Tibetan culture. The Himalayan Rescue Association clinic offers valuable information on altitude sickness prevention. Manang's scenic setting, with towering peaks and glaciers, makes it an excellent place to rest and explore.

Day 06: Trek to Ledar (4,200m)

The trail gradually ascends above the tree line, passing through Yak Kharka, a small settlement where yaks graze peacefully. The landscape becomes more rugged, with breathtaking views of Annapurna IV and Gangapurna. As you reach Ledar, you’ll notice the thinner air and colder temperatures, signaling your approach to Thorong La. Ledar is a small resting point with a few lodges, perfect for preparing for the next high-altitude trek.

Day 07: Trek to Thorong Phedi (4,540m)

The trek continues on a narrow path with steep cliffs, leading to Thorong Phedi, the base camp before crossing Thorong La Pass. Along the way, you cross wooden bridges over icy streams and may spot blue sheep grazing on the rocky slopes. Some trekkers prefer to climb further to High Camp (4,880m) to shorten the next day’s trek. Thorong Phedi is a small settlement with a few lodges, surrounded by towering cliffs and rugged terrain.

Day 08: Cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and Trek Down to Muktinath (3,800m)

An early morning ascent takes you to Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek, offering breathtaking sunrise views over the Himalayas. The descent toward Muktinath is long and steep, passing through barren, rocky landscapes with stunning views of Dhaulagiri. Muktinath is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists, home to the famous temple with eternal flames. The village offers a mix of cultural heritage, mountain views, and comfortable lodges to rest after the challenging climb.

Day 09: Drive to Pokhara (822m) via Jomsom (2,720m)

A scenic drive from Muktinath to Jomsom follows the Kali Gandaki River, passing through the windswept landscapes of Kagbeni, an ancient Tibetan-style village. After changing vehicles in Jomsom, the drive continues along rough mountain roads, offering views of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges. The transition from dry, arid landscapes to the lush green hills of Pokhara is refreshing. Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city, offers relaxation with its serene Phewa Lake and vibrant atmosphere.

Day 10: Drive to Kathmandu (1,400m)

The final journey takes you along winding highways, passing through terraced hillsides, rivers, and small villages. The drive offers a last glimpse of Nepal’s rural beauty before reaching the bustling capital. Back in Kathmandu, you can reflect on the incredible trek while enjoying the city’s cultural sites and lively markets. This marks the end of an unforgettable adventure in the Himalayas.
